About wall framing

How the wall framing calculator works

Stud count is wall length ÷ spacing, plus one to close the end, plus extras for corners and each opening. Plates are the wall length top and bottom (two or three depending on the framing convention), and noggings run between studs at each row.

The extras are what estimates miss: every opening needs a pair of jack studs and a pair of king studs on top of the regular spacing.

Formula: studs = length/spacing + 1 + extras

Frequently asked questions

What stud spacing should I use?

450 mm centres is the Australian domestic standard, 400 mm in the UK, 16 inches in the US. 600 mm is used where the cladding and lining can span it.

How many studs for a 6 m wall?

Fourteen at 450 mm centres, before corners and openings. Each corner adds two and each opening about four.

Why is the stud shorter than the wall height?

Because the plates take up space. With a bottom plate and a double top plate at 45 mm each, a 2,400 mm wall needs 2,265 mm studs.

What are noggings for?

They stop studs twisting and give a fixing point mid-wall. One row is typical for a 2.4 m wall; taller walls need two.

Is this a structural design?

No. It is a quantity estimate. Stud size, spacing and bracing for a load-bearing wall are engineering decisions governed by code.
