League Points Calculator

League points from wins, draws and losses under any scoring system — three points for a win, two, or a custom one — with points per game and the projected finish.

Most football leagues award three points for a win and one for a draw, a change made in the 1980s and 90s specifically to make winning more attractive than drawing.

About league points

How the league points calculator works

Most football leagues award three points for a win and one for a draw, a change made in the 1980s and 90s specifically to make winning more attractive than drawing. Under the old two-point system a win was worth exactly two draws; under three points it is worth three, which measurably reduced defensive play.

Other competitions differ: rugby union adds bonus points for scoring four tries or losing narrowly, and some leagues award points for overtime losses. The calculator takes whatever values your competition uses.

Formula: points = wins × win value + draws × draw value + losses × loss value

Frequently asked questions

How many points for a win?

Three in most football leagues, with one for a draw. Rugby union uses four with bonus points, and some competitions still use two.

Why did leagues change from two points to three?

To make winning worth more than two draws, which measurably reduced defensive play.

What are bonus points?

Extra points for a specified achievement — scoring four tries in rugby union, or losing by seven or fewer. Enter your total here.

How is the projection calculated?

Points per game multiplied by the games in a full season. It assumes current form holds.

What is the maximum I can still reach?

Current points plus a win in every remaining game, shown on its own row.
