Calories from walking depend on three things: how far you go, how much you weigh, and how fast. Weight matters most — moving a heavier body the same distance costs more energy, which is why two people on the same walk burn very different amounts.
The estimate uses METs from the Compendium of Physical Activities: 3.5 METs for a casual 4.8 km/h, rising to 5.0 at a brisk 6.4 km/h. One MET is resting metabolism, so a 3.5-MET walk burns three and a half times your resting rate.
The number is gross calories — it includes the energy you would have burned sitting still over the same period. Net calories, the extra burned by walking, are roughly a fifth lower, and that is the figure that matters if you are counting a deficit.
Stride length defaults to about 43% of height, which is the usual walking estimate; measuring your own over ten paces is more accurate.

Around 400 for a 70 kg person walking casually — but it varies a great deal with weight, from about 290 at 50 kg to 575 at 100 kg.

Roughly 7 to 8 km, depending on your stride. Stride is usually about 43% of your height.
Does walking faster burn more?
Per minute yes, but over a fixed number of steps the difference is smaller than people expect — you cover the same distance in less time.
What is the difference between gross and net calories?
Gross includes what you would have burned anyway; net is the extra from walking, roughly a fifth lower. Net is the figure for a calorie deficit.
Is 10,000 steps a real target?
It came from a 1965 Japanese pedometer marketing campaign, not research. Later studies find most of the mortality benefit arrives by about 7,500 steps.
