How the vertical jump calculator works

The reach method subtracts your standing reach from the highest point you touch. The hang-time method uses gravity: a body in free flight rises and falls in equal halves, so height equals g × t² ÷ 8 — 0.6 seconds of air time is a 44 cm jump. Both are shown in centimetres and inches.

Formula: reach: jump = touch height − standing reach; hang time: h = g·t² ÷ 8

Frequently asked questions

How high is a good vertical jump?

For adult men, 50 cm (20 in) is good and 70 cm or more excellent; for women, 40 cm is good and 55 cm or more excellent. NBA combine leaders reach about 100 cm from a running start.

Why does hang time give a different number from the reach test?

The reach test measures how high your fingertips go, which includes arm swing and reach; hang time measures the rise of your centre of mass. Hang-time figures are usually a little lower.

How do I measure hang time?

With a jump mat, or a slow-motion phone video — count frames from take-off to landing and divide by the frame rate. Tucking your knees in the air inflates the number, so land with legs as straight as you took off.

Where does g·t²/8 come from?

A body in free flight rises for half the hang time, and the distance fallen in time t/2 under gravity is ½ × g × (t/2)², which simplifies to g·t²/8.
