Unchecked growth is exponential; real populations slow as they approach the resources available. The logistic equation captures that: growth is fastest at half the carrying capacity and stops at it.
The inflection — the point of fastest growth — is where a manager sees the largest sustainable harvest, and where a population that looks like it is booming is in fact already slowing.

What is carrying capacity?
The population an environment can sustain indefinitely. Growth slows as it is approached and stops at it — the ceiling of the logistic curve.
What is the logistic equation?
Exponential growth with a brake proportional to how full the environment is. It gives the S-shaped curve every population biology course starts with.
When is growth fastest?
At half the carrying capacity. That is the maximum sustainable yield point in fisheries — harvest there and the population regrows fastest.
Why does the exponential figure matter?
It shows what the brake removed. Populations that look like they are still booming are often already past the inflection.
Do real populations follow this?
Roughly, in stable environments. Predators, disease, time lags and changing resources all produce overshoots and oscillations the simple model does not show.
