How the mpge converter works

Europe and Australia quote consumption per distance (kWh/100 km or Wh/km); the UK and US often quote distance per energy (mi/kWh); the US window sticker gives MPGe, miles per gallon-equivalent, on the basis that a US gallon of petrol holds 33.7 kWh. They are all the same quantity: 15 kWh/100 km is 150 Wh/km, 6.67 km/kWh, 4.14 mi/kWh and 140 MPGe.

Formula: mi/kWh = 62.137 ÷ (kWh/100 km); MPGe = 33.7 × mi/kWh

Frequently asked questions

What is MPGe?

Miles per gallon equivalent — how far an EV goes on the energy in one US gallon of petrol, defined as 33.7 kWh. It lets the US window sticker compare EVs with petrol cars, though it says nothing about cost or emissions.

Why 33.7 kWh?

It is the lower heating value of a US gallon of petrol, 115,000 BTU, converted to kilowatt-hours. UK gallons are larger, and the UK does not use MPGe.

Which figure should I compare cars on?

Whichever your market uses — but note that kWh/100 km is consumption (lower is better) while km/kWh, mi/kWh and MPGe are efficiency (higher is better). The calculator shows all of them.

Does this include charging losses?

Trip-computer figures do not; the US EPA’s MPGe does (it is measured at the wall). Wall-to-wheel consumption is typically 10–15% higher than what the dashboard shows.
