Women carry more essential body fat — 10 to 13% against 2 to 5% — so at the same BMI a woman typically has a higher fat percentage and it is distributed differently. The waist threshold is correspondingly lower: 80 cm rather than 94 cm for raized risk.

Is BMI different for women?
The formula and the WHO thresholds are identical. What differs is what a given BMI represents — women carry more essential fat, and the waist thresholds are lower.
What waist measurement is healthy for women?
Under 80 cm is low risk, 80 to 88 raized, and above 88 substantially raized. For men the equivalent figures are 94 and 102.
What body fat percentage is healthy?
Roughly 21 to 33% for women aged 20 to 39, rizing with age. Below about 12% is below the essential level.
Does BMI work during pregnancy?
No. Pregnancy weight gain is assessed against its own guidelines based on pre-pregnancy BMI.
Why can a healthy BMI still be a concern?
Because BMI ignores where fat sits. Abdominal fat carries most of the metabolic risk, which is why the waist measurement can disagree with the BMI.
