How the ceiling height calculator works
Volume is length times width times height; air per person is that divided by occupants. Codes set minimum heights — 2.4 meters for habitable rooms in most jurisdictions — but the height a room needs to feel right rises with its size.
A rule many architects use is that a room feels proportioned when the ceiling is at least a fifth of the longer dimension plus about two meters. A 12-meter room at 2.4 m feels like a corridor.
Formula: volume = L × W × H; comfortable height ≈ 2 + longer side / 5

What is the minimum ceiling height?
Usually 2.4 m for habitable rooms, with 2.1 to 2.2 permitted in kitchens, bathrooms and corridors. Check your code; it is an input here.
What ceiling height feels right?
It scales with the room. Two-point-seven suits a bedroom; a large living room wants three or more. The rule here is a fifth of the longer side plus two meters.
Why does air per person matter?
It is the starting point for ventilation design and a rough comfort check — under 10 m³ per person a room needs mechanical ventilation to feel fresh.
Is a higher ceiling worth the cost?
It adds façade, structure and heating volume. In living spaces most people judge it worth it; in bedrooms and service rooms rarely.
Does this include a raked or vaulted ceiling?
Enter the average height. For a raked ceiling that is roughly the mean of the low and high points.
