About data conversion

How the gib to gb converter works

Storage converts through the byte (8 bits). Drive makers and network speeds use decimal prefixes (1 GB = 10⁹ bytes); operating systems often report binary units (1 GiB = 2³⁰ = 1,073,741,824 bytes) — sometimes labelled "GB". The gap is 7.4% at the gigabyte and 10% at the terabyte.

The US uses customary units (US gallon, short ton, °F) in daily life; NIST SP 811 gives the exact SI factors.

Frequently asked questions about data conversion

What is the difference between GiB and GB?

A GiB is 2³⁰ bytes (1,073,741,824); a GB is 10⁹ bytes (1,000,000,000). The GiB is about 7.4% larger.

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

Because the maker counts decimal terabytes and the operating system displays binary tebibytes while labelling them "GB".

Which is correct?

Both, for their own definition. The confusion comes from Windows using decimal names for binary units.

What is 16 GiB in GB?

17.18 GB.

Where do the names come from?

The IEC introduced kibi, mebi and gibi in 1998 precisely to end this ambiguity. Adoption has been partial.
