KiB to Bytes Converter

Convert kibibytes to bytes — exactly 1,024 bytes to the kibibyte. Results update as you type; exact factors shown.

One kibibyte (2¹⁰) is 1,024 bytes — see the exact factor, not a rounded rule of thumb.

About data conversion

How the kib to bytes converter works

Storage converts through the byte (8 bits). Drive makers and network speeds use decimal prefixes (1 GB = 10⁹ bytes); operating systems often report binary units (1 GiB = 2³⁰ = 1,073,741,824 bytes) — sometimes labelled "GB". The gap is 7.4% at the gigabyte and 10% at the terabyte.

The US uses customary units (US gallon, short ton, °F) in daily life; NIST SP 811 gives the exact SI factors.

Frequently asked questions about data conversion

How many bytes in a kibibyte?

Exactly 1,024 — two to the tenth.

How is that different from a kilobyte?

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes. The binary prefixes were standardised in 1998 to end the ambiguity.

What is 4 KiB?

4,096 bytes — the standard memory page and disk block size.

Why 1,024?

Because memory is addressed in powers of two, and 2¹⁰ is the nearest to a thousand.

What does Windows call it?

KB — it reports binary sizes with decimal names, which is the source of most of the confusion.
