How the log base 10 calculator works
log₁₀(x) answers "10 to what power gives x?". Because it counts powers of ten it also counts digits: any number between 1,000 and 9,999 has a log between 3 and 4. That is why it underpins scales that span enormous ranges — the pH scale, the decibel and the Richter magnitude are all base-10 logarithms, so each whole step is a tenfold change.
