MB to GB Converter

Convert megabytes to gigabytes — 1,000 MB to the GB in decimal units, which is how storage is sold. Results update as you type; exact factors shown.

One megabyte (10⁶) is 0.001 gigabyte (10⁹) — see the exact factor, not a rounded rule of thumb.

About data conversion

How the mb to gb converter works

Storage converts through the byte (8 bits). Drive makers and network speeds use decimal prefixes (1 GB = 10⁹ bytes); operating systems often report binary units (1 GiB = 2³⁰ = 1,073,741,824 bytes) — sometimes labelled "GB". The gap is 7.4% at the gigabyte and 10% at the terabyte.

The US uses customary units (US gallon, short ton, °F) in daily life; NIST SP 811 gives the exact SI factors.

Frequently asked questions about data conversion

How many MB in a GB?

1,000 MB in decimal units, which is what drive makers and networks use. Operating systems often show binary units, where 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB.

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

The drive is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; the operating system divides by 1,024 three times and shows 931 GiB.

Which is right?

Both — they are different units. The SI prefixes are decimal, and IEC prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) are the binary ones.

How many photos fit in a GB?

Roughly 300 at 3 MB each, or about 60 raw files.

Is a megabit the same as a megabyte?

No — eight megabits to the megabyte, which is why a 100 Mbps line downloads at 12.5 MB/s.
