How the asphalt tonnage calculator works
Asphalt is ordered by the tonne but laid by area and thickness. Volume is area times compacted thickness; at a compacted density of about 2,400 kg/m³ each cubic metre is 2.4 tonnes. Add a few per cent for wastage and the unevenness of the base and you have the order. A typical residential driveway is 40 to 50 mm compacted; roads are laid in courses of 40 to 100 mm.
Formula: volume = area × thickness; tonnes = volume × density × (1 + wastage)

How many tonnes of asphalt per square metre?
About 0.12 tonnes per square metre at 50 mm compacted — 2.4 kg per square metre per millimetre. A 60 m² driveway at 50 mm is a little over seven tonnes.
What thickness should a driveway be?
Forty to fifty millimetres compacted over a properly prepared base for cars; 75 mm or more, often in two courses, where trucks turn. The base matters more than the asphalt.
Compacted or loose thickness?
Compacted — the finished thickness. Asphalt is laid about a quarter thicker than the finished depth and rolled down, and the tonnage is the same either way.
What density should I use?
Around 2,350 to 2,450 kg/m³ compacted for dense-graded hot mix. Open-graded and cold mixes are lighter; the supplier will quote a figure.
Why allow wastage?
Base irregularities take extra material, edges are thicker than planned, and a load short of the finish line is worse than a little left over. Five per cent is usual.
