About temperature conversion

How the celsius to fahrenheit converter works

Celsius and Fahrenheit are offset scales, so the conversion is not a simple multiplication: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin has the same size of degree as Celsius but starts at absolute zero: K = °C + 273.15. The two scales meet at −40°.

Frequently asked questions about temperature conversion

What is the formula?

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32. The 32 is there because Fahrenheit puts freezing at 32°, not zero.

What is 20°C in Fahrenheit?

68°F — a comfortable room.

What is body temperature in Fahrenheit?

37°C is 98.6°F.

Is there a temperature where both scales agree?

Yes, −40°. It is the only one.

What is the quick estimate?

Double it and add 30: 20°C → 70°F, close to the true 68°F.
