Each dancer needs about 0.45 m² (4.5–5 sq ft) to move comfortably; a packed club floor squeezes to 0.3. Multiply out for the area, take the square root for a square floor, and divide by a panel’s area — hire floors come in 0.9 m (3 ft) or 1.2 m (4 ft) squares.
Formula: area = guests × share dancing × m² per dancer; panels = area ÷ panel area

FAQFrequently asked questions
What size dance floor for 100 guests?
About 18 m² (190 sq ft) — a 4.3 m square, or a 5 × 5 layout of 0.9 m panels — for 40 dancers at once. A young, party-hard crowd could need 25 m²; a corporate dinner 12.
Is bigger better?
No — an oversized floor with a few dancers on it looks empty and discourages people from joining. Slightly small and full is the atmosphere you want; you can always spill onto the carpet.
What if the venue has a fixed floor?
Run the calculator backwards: the venue’s area divided by 0.45 is how many can dance comfortably. If that is well under 40% of your guests, the band or DJ should expect the floor to be busy only in bursts.
How do panels come?
Hire floors are modular squares, usually 0.9 m (3 ft) or 1.2 m (4 ft), laid in a rectangle with edging strips; hire companies quote by the panel or by a nominal size like “16 × 16 ft”.
