Range is usable battery energy divided by consumption. Manufacturers quote gross battery size; 90–95% is usable. Consumption varies more than most people expect: around 150 Wh/km in town, 170 mixed, 200–220 at motorway speed, and 25–40% more in winter because of heating and cold-battery losses. The reserve row is the practical range, because nobody plans to arrive at 0%.
Formula: range = battery kWh × usable share ÷ (Wh/km ÷ 1,000)

FAQFrequently asked questions
Why is my real range less than the brochure?
Official test cycles (WLTP, EPA) run at modest speeds in mild weather. Motorway speed, cold, heating, roof racks, a full load and hills all raise consumption; a WLTP figure is typically 15–25% above real mixed driving.
What does winter do?
Cabin heating can draw 2–5 kW, the battery is less efficient when cold, and regenerative braking is limited until it warms — together 20–40% less range. Pre-conditioning while plugged in recovers part of it.
Why keep a 20% reserve?
Chargers can be occupied or broken, and the last few percent charge slowly and are hard on the battery. Planning to arrive at 10–20% is the norm for road trips.
How do I find my car’s consumption?
The trip computer shows it, usually as kWh/100 km or mi/kWh. Divide kWh/100 km by 10 for Wh/km; for mi/kWh, Wh/km = 621 ÷ (mi/kWh).
