How the façade panel count calculator works
Panels across is the width divided by the panel width, rounded up; panels down likewise. The rounding is the waste: an elevation 12.4 metres wide in 1.2-metre panels needs 11 panels, the last of which is a third cut away.
Choosing a module that divides the elevation evenly — or adjusting the elevation to suit the module — is the cheapest façade decision there is.
Formula: panels = ceil(W / w) × ceil(H / h); waste = panel area − elevation area

How do I count façade panels?
Width over panel width rounded up, times height over panel height rounded up. The rounding up is where the waste comes from.
How do I reduce waste?
Choose a module that divides the elevation, or set the elevation to a multiple of the module. Moving a wall 200 mm can save a whole column of cut panels.
What about openings?
Panels around windows are cut, not omitted, so the deduction here is approximate. Detailed setting-out around openings always needs a drawing.
Do the part panels cost the same?
Usually more — the cut, the handling and the waste. Suppliers often charge a full panel for anything over half.
Is this parametric design?
It is the arithmetic parametric tools automate. A script that varies the module and reports the waste is doing exactly this, thousands of times.
