About temperature conversion

How the fahrenheit to kelvin converter works

Celsius and Fahrenheit are offset scales, so the conversion is not a simple multiplication: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin has the same size of degree as Celsius but starts at absolute zero: K = °C + 273.15. The two scales meet at −40°.

Frequently asked questions about temperature conversion

What is the formula?

K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 — Fahrenheit to Celsius first, then the offset.

What is absolute zero in Fahrenheit?

−459.67°F.

What is room temperature in kelvin?

About 293 K, or 68°F.

Why go through Celsius?

Because a kelvin is the same size as a Celsius degree, so only the scaling from Fahrenheit needs doing first.

Is there a negative kelvin?

Not on this scale — 0 K is the coldest possible, so anything below it is meaningless.
