About place value

How the place value calculator works

In a positional system each digit is worth its face value times the place it sits in. In 4,530.7 the 4 means four thousands, the 5 five hundreds, the 3 three tens and the 7 seven tenths.

That is what makes arithmetic algorithms work: carrying and borrowing are just moving between adjacent places, each worth ten times its neighbour.

Formula: value of a digit = digit × 10^(its place)
