How the race splits calculator works

Divide the target time by the distance for the even pace, then tilt it: a negative split starts a few percent slower than even and finishes faster, which is how most distance records are set; a positive split fades. The spread is the difference between the first and last split as a percentage of the even pace, ramped smoothly across the race.

Formula: even pace = time ÷ distance; split_i = even × (1 ± spread × (position − ½))

Frequently asked questions

Which strategy is best?

For most runners a slight negative split — start 2–4% slower than even and finish faster. Starting fast feels free for a few kilometres and is paid back with interest later; almost every distance world record has been run at even or negative splits.

What spread should I use?

Two to five percent between first and last split is realistic. A 4% spread on a 5:00/km race means starting near 5:06 and finishing near 4:54.

Why is the halfway time useful?

It is the one checkpoint everyone sees. If you reach it slower than planned, the second half has to be faster than you trained for; if you are faster, you are probably going to fade.

Do the splits allow for hills?

No — they assume a flat course. On a hilly course, adjust the splits by feel, or use a course profile and run by effort rather than pace.
