How the standard form calculator works

Standard form writes any number as a × 10ⁿ where a is at least 1 and less than 10. 149,600,000 becomes 1.496 × 10⁸; 0.000000123 becomes 1.23 × 10⁻⁷.

The rule that a must sit between 1 and 10 is what makes the form unique — without it, 14.96 × 10⁷ and 0.1496 × 10⁹ would be equally valid ways of writing the same number.

This is the same thing American textbooks call scientific notation; the two names describe an identical convention.
