Direct use is what comes out of the tap: showers, laundry, dishes, garden. It is typically 150 to 250 litres a person a day.
Embedded water dwarfs it. Producing a kilogram of beef takes about 15,000 litres; a cotton t-shirt about 2,700; a cup of coffee about 130. Direct household use is usually under 5% of the total, which is why efficient showerheads matter far less than diet.

What is a water footprint?
All the water used to support your consumption — what comes out of your taps plus the far larger volume embedded in what you buy.

Does taking shorter showers help?
A little. Direct household use is typically under 10% of the total footprint, so diet changes achieve far more than bathroom ones.
Is all water use equally bad?
No. Rainwater used where it falls is very different from irrigation drawn from a depleting aquifer. Footprint totals hide that distinction.
What is the biggest lever?
Reducing beef, and reducing food waste — throwing out food discards all the water that went into producing it.
