About production capacity

How the production capacity calculator works

Nameplate capacity assumes everything runs perfectly, which nothing does. Effective capacity applies your real availability, performance and quality — the same three factors as OEE — and the gap between the two is usually 30 to 40%.

Planning against nameplate is how plants end up accepting orders they cannot fill. The effective figure is the one to quote to sales.

The demand comparison shows what you would need to change to close a gap: more shifts, faster cycle, or better yield, and which of the three gets there most cheaply is usually obvious once the numbers are beside each other.

Formula: effective capacity = nameplate × availability × performance × quality

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate production capacity?

Machines times operating hours divided by cycle time gives nameplate; multiply by availability, performance and quality for what you can actually make.

Why is effective capacity so much lower?

Because the three factors multiply. At 88, 92 and 97 per cent you keep about 79% of nameplate.

Which figure should I quote to sales?

The effective one. Planning against nameplate is how plants accept orders they cannot fill.

How do I add capacity fastest?

Usually more hours, since it needs no capital. Cycle time and yield improvements are cheaper per unit but slower to realize.

Does this account for changeovers?

Only through the availability factor. If changeovers are frequent, make sure your availability figure reflects them.
