About your hourly wage

From an hourly rate to every pay period

Before tax

Hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks. At $35 for a 38-hour week: $35 × 38 = $1,330 a week, and $1,330 × 52 = $69,160 a year — $2,660 a fortnight, $5,763 a month. Overtime hours are added at your chosen multiplier before annualising; casual loading lifts the base rate by 25% first.

After tax

The calculator then applies the 2026-27 resident scale — nothing on the first $18,200, 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above — less the low income tax offset, plus the 2% Medicare levy and any HELP repayment. On $69,160 that is $12,651 out, leaving $56,509: $28.60 for every hour you actually work.

Working backwards

Press After tax and type the hourly take-home you want. The calculator solves for the gross rate that produces it — the number to put in a pay negotiation.

RatePer hourPer week (38h)Take-home per year
National Minimum Wage (adult)$26.44$1,004.90about $45,223
Casual minimum (+25% loading)$33.05$1,255.90about $53,909

The Fair Work Commission’s Annual Wage Review sets the National Minimum Wage each July; the 2026-27 rate applies from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026. It is the absolute floor — almost every worker is covered by a modern award whose classification rates sit above it, and junior, apprentice and supported-wage rates are percentages of the adult rate. The calculator flags any base rate below $26.44; if yours is, check your award on fairwork.gov.au, because underpayment is recoverable.

What each hour is worth after the ATO

PAYG withholding does not care whether you are paid by the hour or by salary — the year’s earnings are taxed on the same resident scale.

Taxable incomeMarginal rate≈ hourly rate (38h × 52)
$0 – $18,2000%to $9.21
$18,201 – $45,00015%to $22.77
$45,001 – $135,00030%to $68.32
$135,001 – $190,00037%to $96.15
$190,001+45%above $96.15

Add the 2% Medicare levy and, above $69,528, a HELP repayment of 15% of the income over the threshold. At $35 an hour every extra hour is taxed at 32%, so a $52.50 overtime hour (time-and-a-half) puts about $35.70 in your pocket. The low income tax offset ($700, tapering out at $66,667) is why lower rates keep a bigger share: $26.44 an hour keeps 86.6% of gross, $50 an hour keeps 77.6%.

The three things that change an hourly rate

Casual loading. Casuals get a 25% loading on the base rate in place of annual and sick leave: $35 becomes $43.75, and full-time hours gross $86,450 instead of $69,160. It is not free money — a permanent employee on $35 accrues about four weeks’ annual leave and two weeks’ personal leave a year, worth roughly six weeks’ pay.

Super. Your employer must pay 12% of ordinary time earnings into super on top of the hourly rate — $8,299 a year on $35 an hour. It is not deducted from your pay and it is not in the take-home figure; if a job is advertised “$40 an hour including super”, the cash rate is $35.71.

Overtime. Awards typically pay time-and-a-half for the first two or three overtime hours and double time after that, with penalty rates for weekends and public holidays. The calculator applies one multiplier to the overtime hours you enter at the Standard level; five hours a week at 1.5× on $35 adds $13,650 gross and about $9,282 after tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my annual pay from an hourly rate?

Multiply the rate by your weekly hours, then by 52. At $35 an hour for a 38-hour week: $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160 a year before tax. This calculator then deducts 2026-27 income tax and the Medicare levy to show take-home of about $56,509.

What is the minimum wage in Australia for 2026-27?

The National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week, from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026. Casuals get at least $33.05 with the 25% loading. Most award classification rates are higher.

How much tax comes out of hourly pay?

The same as salary — the year’s earnings go through the resident scale: 0% to $18,200, 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, 45% above, less LITO, plus 2% Medicare levy. On $35 an hour full-time ($69,160) that is $12,651 a year, leaving $56,509.

What hourly rate do I need to take home $30 an hour?

About $37.06 an hour gross on a 38-hour week — $73,235 a year before tax. Switch the calculator to After tax and enter $30 to see it, or any other target.

Is super included in my hourly rate?

No. Employers must pay 12% of ordinary time earnings into your super fund on top of your pay. On $35 an hour that is $8,299 a year. If a rate is advertised “including super”, divide by 1.12 to find the cash rate.

How does casual loading affect take-home pay?

A 25% loading on $35 gives $43.75 an hour. Full-time that grosses $86,450 and takes home about $68,266 — $11,757 more than the permanent rate — but with no paid annual or sick leave and no guaranteed hours.

Does the calculator include HELP repayments?

Yes — switch HELP debt on at the Standard level. Compulsory repayment starts at $69,528 of repayment income in 2026-27, at 15% of the income above the threshold (17% above $129,717, and 10% of total income above $186,050). At $35 an hour full-time you are just under the threshold, so nothing is deducted.

Is the Hourly Wage Calculator free and up to date?

Yes — free, no account is required, and calculator arithmetic runs in your browser. It uses 2026-27 ATO rates and the Fair Work National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026, checked August 2026.

Understanding your result

Select the question that matches where you are right now.

Your result is your hourly rate translated into the numbers you actually live on — weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual pay, before and after 2026-27 tax.

What to do with it

Use the fortnightly or monthly take-home for rent and budgeting, and the take-home per hour worked to compare offers — a higher headline rate with fewer paid hours can lose to a steadier week.

What it is not

Not a payslip replica. Tax codes, salary sacrifice, allowances and the exact PAYG withholding tables move individual payslips; this is the steady-state annual picture at 2026-27 resident rates.

The minimum wage check

The callout compares your base rate to the $26.44 floor. If it flags a shortfall, look up your award classification on fairwork.gov.au — underpayment is recoverable.

Three levers set what an hourly job actually pays.

Paid hours, not the rate

Moving from 38 to 40 hours at $35 adds $3,640 a year gross — more than a $1 rate rise on a 38-hour week ($1,976).

Casual loading

The 25% loading turns $35 into $43.75 and adds about $11,757 of take-home a year, in exchange for leave and security.

The 32% wedge

Between $45,000 and $135,000 every extra dollar loses 30 cents of tax and 2 cents of Medicare levy — which is why overtime never feels as big as it looks.

Hourly pay responds to structure as much as to the rate itself.

Price your overtime

Model it at the Standard level before agreeing — five hours a week at 1.5× on $35 is worth about $9,282 a year after tax.

Know your award

The National Minimum Wage is the floor; your award classification, penalty rates and allowances usually sit above it. Check fairwork.gov.au’s pay calculator for your classification.

Negotiate on take-home

Use the After tax mode to turn the weekly take-home you need into the gross rate to ask for, so the conversation starts from the right number.

Your hourly rate connects to the rest of your pay picture.
