How the record comparison calculator works
A time is meaningful against a reference: the world record, the national mark, a club best or last year's time. The ratio of record to time is the performance percentage — 80% means the record-holder would finish while you had 80% of the course done. The gap per kilometre and the metres behind at the finish translate it into something a training plan can chase.
Formula: performance = record / time; gap per km = (time − record) / km; behind at the finish = distance × (1 − record / time)

FAQFrequently asked questions
What does a performance percentage mean?
The record time over yours. Sixty per cent means the record-holder would finish while you had 60% of the course done — a plain measure of how far off the standard you are.
What is a good percentage?
Against world records, 70% is a good recreational runner, 80% a strong club athlete, 90% elite. Against a club or age-group record the same numbers mean much more.
Why seconds per kilometre?
Because that is how training is planned. A gap of 98 seconds a kilometre is a different project from one of 10.
Does this work for swimming or cycling?
For any timed distance: enter the distance in kilometres and both times. The pace rows will read per kilometre, which is unusual for a pool but the arithmetic holds.
What about age grading?
Age-graded tables compare a time with the best possible for your age and sex — a fairer benchmark for most people. Enter the age-group record as the benchmark to get the same effect.
