In cricket, batting average is runs scored divided by the number of times out.
How the batting average calculator works
In cricket, batting average is runs scored divided by the number of times out. Not-out innings count towards the runs but not the dismissals, which is why a batter with many not-outs can average far above their typical score, and why the statistic is meaningless until someone has actually been dismissed. An average above 50 in Test cricket is exceptional; Bradman's 99.94 is the most famous number in the sport.
In baseball, batting average is hits divided by at-bats, expressed to three decimal places and spoken as if it were a whole number — .300 is "three hundred". Walks, sacrifices and hit-by-pitch are not at-bats, so they neither help nor hurt it. .300 is a very good season; .400 has not been done over a full season since 1941.
