The projection multiplies that rate across a full season, which assumes the rate holds — a reasonable first estimate and a poor prediction, since form, fixtures and fitness all move.
The more useful figure is usually the last one: given a target for the season, what rate is needed from the remaining games. That is the number that says whether a target is still live.
Formula: per game = total ÷ games; required = (target − total) ÷ games remaining
