How the metal plate weight calculator works

Weight is volume times density: length by width by thickness, times the material's mass per cubic meter. Mild steel is about 7,850 kg/m³, aluminium 2,700, copper 8,960 — so a sheet of aluminium weighs about a third of the same sheet in steel. Suppliers price plate by weight, which makes this the number behind every steel quote.

Formula: weight = length × width × thickness × density; per m² = thickness × density

Frequently asked questions

How much does a steel plate weigh?

About 7.85 kg per square meter per millimeter of thickness — so a 2.4 × 1.2 m sheet of 6 mm plate is about 136 kg, and 10 mm plate 78.5 kg per square meter.

What densities does this use?

Mild steel 7,850 kg/m³, stainless 8,000, aluminium 2,700, copper 8,960, brass 8,500. Alloys vary by a per cent or two; enter a custom density for a specific grade.

Why is weight the thing to know?

Because plate is sold and shipped by weight, cranes and racks are rated by it, and a sheet that looks manageable at 3 mm is a two-person lift at 6.

Does this work for round or shaped plates?

Enter the bounding rectangle for a quick over-estimate, or the true area times thickness times density for the exact figure. The per-m² row gives the multiplier.

What about tube, bar and beam?

Same principle, different cross-section: multiply the section area by the length and the density. Section tables give the weight per meter directly.
