How the whip calculator works
Add the walks and hits allowed and divide by innings pitched, reading .1 and .2 innings as one and two outs. Hit batters and errors are not counted. Around 1.30 is average in the majors; under 1.10 is elite.

What is a good WHIP?
About 1.30 is league average; under 1.10 is elite, and the very best seasons dip below 1.00. Over 1.50 means a baserunner and a half every inning.
Does WHIP include hit batters?
No. WHIP is walks plus hits only — hit-by-pitch, errors and fielder’s choices are excluded, which is why some analysts prefer on-base percentage against.
How do WHIP and ERA relate?
WHIP measures how many runners a pitcher allows; ERA measures how many score. A low WHIP with a high ERA usually means bad luck with sequencing or home runs, and tends to correct over a season.
Are intentional walks counted?
Yes — an intentional walk is a base on balls and counts in WHIP, one of the statistic’s quirks.
