How the passer rating calculator works
The NFL formula scores four components — completion rate, yards per attempt, touchdown rate and interception rate — each capped between 0 and 2.375, adds them, divides by six and multiplies by 100. A perfect game is 158.3; 100 is very good, the league average sits in the 90s. College football uses a simpler weighted sum with no caps, which is why college numbers run higher.

FAQFrequently asked questions
Why is the maximum 158.3?
Each of the four terms is capped at 2.375; four caps add to 9.5, divided by six and times 100 is 158.33. It needs at least 77.5% completions, 12.5 yards per attempt, a touchdown on 11.875% of throws and no interceptions.
Does it count rushing or sacks?
No — passer rating uses passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns and interceptions only. Sacks, fumbles and scrambles are ignored, which is its best-known blind spot; ESPN’s QBR includes them.
Why is the college rating so different?
The NCAA formula is a linear weighting with no caps, so big games produce numbers over 200 and a perfect game has no ceiling. The two scales cannot be compared directly.
What is a good passer rating?
The league average has crept up from the 70s in the 1980s to the low 90s now. A season over 100 is Pro Bowl level; the single-season record is 122.5.
