How the true shooting percentage calculator works

Field-goal percentage treats a three as no better than a two and ignores free throws. Effective FG% fixes the first by counting a three as 1.5 makes; true shooting fixes both by dividing points by the possessions used, where 0.44 free-throw attempts is one trip to the line. League average TS% is about 57%; over 60% is efficient, over 65% elite.

Formula: TS% = PTS ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)); eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA

Frequently asked questions

Why 0.44 free throws?

Not every free-throw attempt uses a possession: and-ones and technicals add a throw without a trip, and some trips are three shots. Empirically about 44% of free-throw attempts end a possession, so 0.44 × FTA counts the trips.

Can TS% be above 100%?

In theory — a player who makes every three and every free throw scores more than two points per true attempt. Over a game it happens occasionally; over a season, never.

What is a good TS%?

The NBA average is about 57–58%. Centres who dunk and shoot free throws well reach 65–70%; guards who take contested mid-range shots often sit in the low 50s.

Which should I use, TS% or eFG%?

eFG% judges shooting from the floor; TS% judges scoring efficiency overall, including drawing fouls. For “is this player an efficient scorer”, TS% is the one.
